The Washington D.C. metropolitan area is home to one of the world’s largest concentrations of phylogeneticists, housed variously at the Smithsonian Institution, six or more universities, and numerous federal research laboratories and other scientific organizations. The Washington Area Phylogenetics Consortium (WAPC), established in 2010, is a grass-roots association that seeks to promote collaboration and cohesion within this community, and help it evolve into one of the world’s leading centers for research and training in systematics. The consortium’s efforts are supported in part by, and closely coordinated with, the Frontiers in Phylogenetics program of the National Museum of Natural History.
PHYLO-PIZZA
Phylo-pizza gatherings are intended to encourage informal communication and collaboration, and to provide a forum for discussion of recent research findings. Speakers come from within our community and from many other institutions as well. Pizza and beverages are made available at moderate cost starting at 5:30 p.m., and the scheduled talk typically begins a little after six, followed by further informal discussion. The usual venue is the Executive Conference Room of the National Museum of Natural History.
